"Dear Chris.
We are just so, so grateful to you guys! You may recall that I had contacted ICI about the problem I'll describe, and they stated that if Technical Paint Services couldn't come up with a solution, nobody could!
I had created a through-lounge, and we had decided to paint the floorboards rather than to have carpets. You may also re-call that I had spent some 30 years in on-site management in the construction industry, so thought I knew what I was doing!
I hadn't thought that any preparation of the floorboards was necessary, so applied a water-based polyurethane paint, diluted with 10% water, as a primer. But it blistered extensively. What was interesting was that it didn't blister on some 6mm MDF board that I'd used to simulate floorboards where the old hearth had been removed, nor on the new floorboard where the wall had been removed, nor around the edges of the room (where there would have been 'gripper rods').
So it was obvious that the floorboards were contaminated - most likely from the former rubber-backed underlay (I learned years ago, and through something totally unconnected, that sulphur used in the production of rubber, is highly acidic.)
Having extensively sanded-down the boards to remove the water-based polyurethane primer, I carried out a couple of trial panels. I was sceptical about the results using the water-based primer, so applied a coating of your new shellac-based primer on the other section of the test panel.
The results are amazing! Perfect adhesion to the boards, no signs of any effect of contamination, and good adhesion of the floor paint to your primer!
Thanks again."
